Fulfilling the Oath by Starhorse Fulfilling the Oath by Starhorse
[EDIT]
Replaced the file with critiques implemented.
sorry for re-uploading on you guys <_< Here's hoping it can make its way into Spectrum! The pre-critique version (along with more in progress shots) can be found on my blog.

You can get a signed print of this on my etsy: www.etsy.com/shop/ErikaStudio or have it made into stuff at Society6! www.deviantart.com/users/outgo…

Haaaaaahhhh, it's finally done!

So, for the question: are there unicorns on Dumaria?

Yes, yes there are.

'cept they're be called Unikahn. Now y'all know where the 'kahn' suffix came from: from my middle school self's desire to be so original that I made up a world where the only difference between normal unicorns and Dumarian unikahn was the spelling. They've changed a bit since then :)

As a side note: the males are white, the females are black. I also imagined the females acting somewhat like ninja-amazons, hence, the muntjak style fangs. [EDIT] *Nafah's suggestion vaulted the female's coloring from black to somewhat iridescent black (like a magpie or raven), so thanks for the suggestion to add more color to her shading ;)

Easily more than 100 hours put in on this one, since it started out as a work doodle I never intended on finishing. Planning, folks, makes things go much smoother. Lack of the aforementioned is responsible for at least half of those hours.

Enjoy!

Such amazing colors and light! Gorgeous and rich and full of depth. The motion is perfect, I'm carried in the wave of the running and back into the picture with the trees. The dramatic fall of light adds to the feeling that they are moving forward, and the shadows are passing over them.

I love how you made the genders look different from one another and how the light is cast upon the male! Heart +fav

The creatures really satisfy me, they look very interesting. The dynamics and the background are well done. The details are impressive, especially the floating leaves.

Ahhh, could this be any prettier?? Awesome work, and good luck getting it in to Spectrum! Unless you already found out, in which case I hope it's good news, and if not, try again! :D

The style is lovely, and i really like the lighting and sense of motion in this piece.
Also, the concept of ninja-amazon unicorn mares is an excellent one.

Holy chips, I wish I had half your skills with lighting and color. I WISH I COULD EAT THIS. That said, I'm quite certain this will make Spectrum. They love dramatically lit pieces with full backgrounds! (As a result, I'll likely not ever submit to Spectrum again in the near future unless I make something halfway decent on accident.)

It's probably way too late for nitpicking, but the shoulder on the female is a little peculiar, as though there isn't much definition between the point of shoulder and humerus. But... this may not be relevant because I find myself placing a weird amount of emphasis on shoulders. :XD:

EITHER WAY. This is entirely Spectrum-worthy. Did you have it ready for this year, or for the next?

Digital art is not recommended for human consumption, but, then again, I've never tried it, personally, so if you wish...

that aside: yes, I did have it ready for spectrum! Nick of time too, last day of the contest as per usual I'm hoping it doesn't just get buried in the scads of other creature-design central pieces there always are. Though, it's probably far more likely to be buried by uneven-breasted women and sexy were-vampires than anything, I suppose. Gotta love Spectrum :)

The leaves and cleaning up behind the male's face did a lot for it. The smaller refinements help also. The previous version was v ery nice, but this one is definitely nicer!

Wow, this is really, really amazing. If it's not to bold of me to say, the only thing I would possibly consider changing is the lines around the flanks of both unikahn; they're a little thicker than most of the other lines. But I digress...this is an absolutely gorgeous piece!

I love it. This is a look I often try to get with my unicorns, but fall far from this point. The only critique I have is the the front leg of the female is at an awkward angle. But I love the look of the unikahn and the lighting is terrific.

I would thicken the legs just a little bit. Even on regular deer the legs are thicker. As elegant and beautiful as the legs you've given them are, they look a bit too small for their body size, and almost too fragile for bounding. OF course, though, that's just my opinion. ^^ It's gorgeous otherwise.
